Canon EOS R vs EOS RP – Five key points analysed

Updated on: March 4th, 2020

The EOS R and EOS RP are Canon’s first two full-frame mirrorless cameras. The RP model came after the R and boasts a more attractive price for those looking for an affordable 35mm format model.

The two products have much in common, including 4K video, Dual Pixel CMOS AF and a very similar interface. There are of course some differences as well and that’s why we spent an extended period with both to highlight all the most important ones. In addition to performing objective side-by-side tests, I was also curious to see which camera I would personally end up preferring.

Released in 2019, the Canon EOS RP is the second full-frame mirrorless camera from the Japanese corporation. It is an entry level model with an attractive price in the full frame market, making it in fact the most affordable product in this category (based on new cameras and official retail prices). It joins the original EOS R in the growing RF system.

The EOS RP has a 26.2MP sensor which is the same found in the EOS 6D mark II, but with optimised micro lenses for the mirrorless flange. Performance is not great when it comes to dynamic range, but it has an ISO range of 100 to 102400 ISO and uses Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF with 4,779 points. It can record 4K video at 24 or 25p, but sadly a heavy 1.75x sensor crop is applied and Dual Pixel CMOS AF only works in 1080p. The burst speed doesn’t go past 5fps. At least there is an excellent multi-angle LCD screen, a mic input and headphone output.

Canon EOS R vs Sony A7 III – The complete comparison

Updated on: March 4th 2020

For the past couple of years, Canon has often been criticised for lacking innovation. Despite integrating interesting technology such as Dual Pixel CMOS, other brands tend to offer a wider variety of features for stills and video – and the slow growth of the EOS M mirrorless system hasn’t contributed to reducing the gap either.

In 2018, Canon unveiled a more serious competitor on the mirrorless and full-frame market: the EOS R. It marks the beginning of the RF line-up, a system that is still in its infancy but will most certainly propel Canon’s advancement in the future.

Released in 2018, the Canon EOS R is the first full-frame mirrorless camera from Canon. It marks the beginning of Canon’s second mirrorless system after the EOS M APS-C series. The mount, called RF, is the same diameter as the EF DSLR mount but with a shorter flange distance. The camera was launched with four lenses including the impressive 50mm f/1.2 and world’s first 28-70mm f/2.

The EOS R features a 30.3MP sensor which is an updated version of the one found on the 5D mark IV. It has an AA filter and an ISO range of 100 to 102400 ISO. It uses Canon’s fast Dual Pixel CMOS AF with 5,566 points and can record 4K video up to 30p and 480Mbps, albeit with a heavy 1.8x crop. The burst speed is 8fps and you’ll also find a nice high resolution EVF and an excellent multi-angle touch screen. Sadly, the camera only takes one memory card.
