Weekly News Round-up: Sigma 150-600mm Sport, Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8 and more

It has been a busy week with a lot of interesting new lenses. The choice of super telephoto zooms for the E-mount system has increased thanks to the arrival of the Sigma 150-600mm Sport. Tamron also seems unstoppable, as it’s about to present the mark II version of the 28-75mm F2.8, along with a surprising F2-2.8 tele zoom. There are also new fast primes from 7Artisans and TTartisan, while Viltrox is expanding its Nikon Z-mount offering.

It is about time! Sigma has finally released a super zoom for the E-mount (and L-mount) system. I’ve used the 150-600mm Contemporary for DSLRs on numerous occasions and found it to be an excellent choice for wildlife photographers on a budget. The Sports version is also very popular, so I’m glad to see that the brand is bringing this type of lens to E-mount users.

The new lens has been designed from the ground up for mirrorless full frame cameras. It is 760g lighter and 26.6mm shorter than the Sports DSLR version. It features various controls on the barrel including a focus mode switch, focus limiter switch, OS switch, Custom mode switch, Zoom torque switch and 3 AFL buttons.

  • Aperture blades: 9
  • Min. focus distance: 58cm (Wide) – 280cm (Tele)
  • Stepping AF motor, internal focusing
  • Filter size: 95mm
  • Optical stabilisation (4 stops)
  • Dust and splash resistant
  • Dimensions: φ109.4 × 263.6mm
  • Weight: 2.1kg
  • Price: $1500 / £1200

The lens is compatible with the TC-1411 and TC-2011 converters for L-mount. Unfortunately they are not available for Sony E-mount at the moment.

Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 and 35-150mm F2-2.8 Di III VXD

Tamron has announced the development of two new lenses for full frame E-mount. The first is a remake of the popular 28-75mm F2.8. It will have a new optical construction and will feature the brand’s Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive linear focus motor (VXD). The design on the outside has also been revisited with more grip on the zoom and focus rings, and a few switches on the side to control settings like the focus mode. The size should remain the same as the 1st generation model.

The 35-150mm F2-2.8 is the first zoom lens for E-mount to go below f/2.8, albeit only at the wide end. Technical details are yet to be revealed, but the build quality will be similar to the 28-75mm G2, and the first official image shows buttons and switches on the barrel to control various settings, including a Custom mode switch.

Furthermore, the Tamron Lens Utility software will allow you to change the function of the Focus Set button as well as the focus ring.

The price and precise shipping dates are still unknown, but the lenses should be available by the end of the year.

Viltrox 24mm F1.8 and 35mm F1.8 AF lenses

Viltrox is releasing two lenses for full frame Z-mount cameras, the 24mm F1.8 and 35mm F1.8. There isn’t a lot of information about the 35mm except the price which should be around $400.

The 24mm is slightly more expensive ($430). It has an aperture ring and is compatible with Eye AF. There is also a USB dock on the rear to receive firmware updates (like all the Viltrox AF lenses).
